Tire emergencies are one of the most common emergencies when owning a vehicle. Something as simple as a nail could cause a flat tire. Car Pros Kia Glendale wants to help you be prepared if something were to happen either on the road or at home with your tire. Remember to locate and read your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual before changing your tire so that you know you are doing it correctly for your model type.

Here are some of the basic steps in changing your tire:

  1. Gather the different items and tools needed for this project. These tools and items usually include an inflated spare tire, lug wrench, and car jack. Be sure to read your Owner’s Manual in case any extra items are needed.
  2. Make sure your vehicle is in a safe location. Use your hazards if you need to pull over on the side of the road to warn other drivers.
  3. Apply your parking brake to minimize the possibility of your vehicle rolling while changing the tire.
  4. Remember that it is helpful to loosen the lug nuts while the vehicle is completely on the ground. Start with the lug wrench on one lug nut and rotate counter clockwise until the resistance breaks (Warning: this may be difficult! It is okay to put some weight behind it with your foot or even all of your body weight)
  5. Refer to the Owner’s Manual to see where to place the jack under the vehicle. Be sure to follow the instructions to ensure that the jack is safely placed and the vehicle will not roll.
  6. After the jack is placed properly, raise the vehicle to where the tire that is being replaced is about 6 inches off of the ground.
  7. Finish unscrewing the lug nuts. Since you loosened them before, this should be much easier!
  8. Remove the tire by pulling with your hands on the tread of the tire. Prevent the newly removed tire from rolling away by placing it flat on the ground.
  9. Place the spare tire onto the lug bolts and push the tire on completely.
  10. Put the lug nuts on the bolts and screw them in by hand for now. Tighten them as much as possible here. You will tighten them again once the vehicle is on the ground.
  11. It is time to lower the vehicle back down to the ground - but only to right where the spare tire is just touching the ground.
  12. Finish tightening the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Tighten completely using the full force of your body.
  13. Finish lowering the vehicle to the ground completely and put all of the tools away.
  14. Bring your flat tire to Car Pros Kia Glendale for a fix and excellent customer service!
